Course Feature: Ray Floyd`s Arrowhead Country Club a ‘must play’ in Myrtle Beach

I had a chance to play Arrowhead Country Club yesterday and was amazed right from the start. From the cart staff to sinking the final putt on the 18th hole, my group definitely had a great time out there.

There are at least 5 different holes that have a view of the Intracoastal Waterway. The switch from bent grass to the new mini verde hybrid was a great choice for the greens too! It’s much more tolerant for our Myrtle Beach climate and is an excellent putting surface. The staff kept the course in great shape too, with the bunkers edged and the fairways nice and plush.

World Golf Hall of Fame inductee and Carolina native Ray Floyd teamed with Golf Course Architect Tom Jackson in 1994 to design Arrowhead Country Club in “Golf Town, USA” Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Arrowhead Country Club is one of eleven 27-hole faciltes on the Grand Strand with the Cypress, Lakes and Waterway nines. The course features Bermuda fairways and newly renovated hybrid Mini Verde Bermuda Grass Greens, practice facilty and Intracoastal Waterway Views on the Cypress and Waterway nines.

Arrowhead Country Club is centrally located in Myrtle Beach and one of the closest courses to the Myrtle Beach International Airport. With four sets of tees, wide fairways and undulating greens, Arrowhead Country is a “must play golf course in Myrtle Beach.” It was even voted “Golf Course of the Year” in 1998. Being so close to the airport is great for the businessman who wants to play a round too. Plus, Arrowhead has showers on the facility, so you can clean up before your flight home.

The course is located just off Hwy 501 before you get to Myrtle Beach. A short drive from our condo accommodations like: Paradise Resort, Grand Atlantic and Bay View.

The Golf Course That Started It All

Myrtle Beach is possibly the best place to golf in all of North America. At this one location, there are dozens of great golf courses to play, many of which have been designed by legends of the game. To play in Myrtle Beach is to play in the mecca of golf. It is a pilgrimage every golf lover should make at some point in their lives. To play a game of golf at some courses in Myrtle Beach is to play in golf heaven.

It was not always this way for Myrtle Beach. In fact, it wasn’t until 1927 when the first golf course in Myrtle Beach opened that the entire region took a different turn and became the one-stop shop for the golf enthusiast. Myrtle Beach has grown from that first golf course and become the golf capital of the world. In all, there are 120 golf courses, where 4.2 million rounds of golf were played last year, an increase of 500,000 over 2007 alone!

What was the golf course that started it all? It was the Pine Lakes Country Club, the oldest course in Myrtle Beach. In the 1920s, several businessmen got together to begin building an upscale beach tourist destination called Arcady. This would eventually become known as the Pine Lakes Country Club and Ocean Forest Hotel when it opened in 1927. This golf course has seen many great players, including the legendary Sam Snead, regarded as possibly the greatest golfer who has ever lived. Even the high profile families of the Vanderbilts and Rockerfellers have played there, as has Gene Sarazen, who has a plaque dedicated to him on the 10th hole.

The club has a strong Scottish tradition, and you can even get a lesson in the history of the club from a starter in a kilt, who will tell you everything you want to know before you tee off. For its history and its legend, this course has become a favorite of golfers in Myrtle Beach, even 81 years after it opened.

Built upon natural dunes, and using freshwater lakes and rolling fairways, legendary architect Robert White, who also was the first president of the PGA, created a course that has been played by generations of golfers, all of whom were left in awe of this course.

While it has gone through many renovations, the Granddaddy of Myrtle Beach golf continues to be the golf course every golfer must play at least once in their lives.

MYRTLE BEACH NATIONAL – KINGS NORTH

Ranked among the best courses in the Myrtle Beach area, the North course at Myrtle Beach National also know as Kings North is one of Arnold Palmer`s best courses. In 1996 the Arnold Palmer Design group gave the course a complete make over, which to this day is one of the Grand Strands Top Golf Courses.

I got to play this EXCELLENT CONDITION GOLF COURSE and would like to first and foremost thank the Myrtle Beach National Company for allowing me to come play. From Tee to Green, the golf course was in excellent condition and would like to let the Superintendent know how good of a job he is doing! Sometimes, those guys do not get enough credit.

Kings North has some great holes, which make this course one of the most requested courses in Myrtle Beach.

With names for three of the hole starting with, the Par 5, 6th hole nick-named “The Gambler” which has an island fairway that is also a shortcut to the green that can be reached in two, but defiantly check the wind.

The 18th Hole Par 4, known as “The Bullseye” has over 40 Bunkers and with a pond on the right side of the green, makes this a great finishing hole.

Bike Weeks slower than normal

The Harley Davidson Bike Rally and the Atlantic Beach Bike Fest bring in thousands of people to the area. With both Myrtle Beach bikes weeks in May, the roads are crowded with bikers roaring up and down the Grand Strand making traffic a nightmare. Although this year`s attendance numbers were down for both week, The Myrtle Beach Bike Weeks are a great way for bikers from all over to meet and greet.

The Harley Davidson Bike Week is usually around the Mother`s Day holiday and the Atlantic Beach Bike Fest is during the Memorial Day Weekend.
